Welcome to Ministry Minutes with Mike Milton, a brief, heartfelt podcast designed to help you reflect on God’s calling in your life. In today’s episode, I return to the story of my first sermon—delivered at the age of four in a little chapel in the woods—and reflect on how we can discern whether we are truly called to preach. After a time away due to illness, I’m following the wise advice of my son, John Michael, to use whatever strength I have to share these reflections. I don’t have the strength thatI had one month ago and I might not have the strength I have now next week. Of course we all depend on the Lord for every breath that we take. But I felt my son was right: that I share for a few minutes every now and then until I can’t. This is my way of serving you, honoring the Lord, and continuing in the ministry He’s entrusted to me. In recent days, I have said that I could give no man an honest day work. That is most certainly true. So I will try to give you five minutes worth of work! In spite of the poor messenger, I pray this will be a blessing to you, as we explore the profound and deeply personal nature of God’s call in plain language with necessary brevity. And while this broadcast is dedicated to those going into the ministry or to those who are in pastoral ministry, I believe it will have biblical teaching that is applicable to all believers and to those who are investigating Christianity. If I’m wrong, then you’ve only wasted a few minutes. Even though I have learned in recent months that “a few minutes” is precious time I believe it could be well-invested—not because of me—but because there is always something good in studying or reflecting on the Word of God.
So there you have it: welcome to Ministry Minutes, a short podcast given by an unwell preacher with serious neurological issues, questionable cognitive stability in decline, and with no promise of regular installments. I just hope the sponsors get in while the getting is good (that is a joke: we don’t have sponsors, and we don’t have paid subscriptions)! Having admitted the truth if you were listening to this, it is only because the Lord is calling you to do so! There is no other rational explanation!
I asked that the Lord use this for his honor and glory, and for the equipping of the Saints for gospel ministry. Lord, let it be. For we are called:
“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2 NKJV).
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
