"Love God and Do as You Please"

The Gospel of Law and Love, Grace, and Good Works

Welcome

Welcome to Your Sunday Chapel. Today, from portions of Romans 7 and 8, I will try to clarify the commonly misunderstood concept that law contradicts love, and that grace and good works cannot coexist. This is not just a theoretical debate for theologians and preachers but a critical issue for everyone to understand. As we will see, the question occupied Paul’s thinking in his letter to the Roman Christians. The biblical response to the question of law and love brings faith for living.

This is the Lord’s Day, the First Sunday in the season called Lent, the 18th of February in the Year of Our Lord 2024.

Call to Worship

Minister: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.
People: His mercy endures forever.

Minister: This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Hymn of Praise

And Can it Be? (audio)

Invocation

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations, and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. —The Collect for the First Sunday in Lent, the Book of Common Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

And the Lord taught us to pray, saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done, in earth,

as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

Forever, Amen.

The Affirmation of Faith

Let us affirm our faith using this uniting creed of the Church:

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,[a]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence, he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.
Amen.

The Gloria Patri (audio)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
And to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen.
